With what has been the most severe wind storm in recorded California history, wind gusts reaching 100 miles per hour hit Southern California as well as Nevada, Arizon and Utah, causing extraordinary damage to personal and business property. In Los Angeles, the destruction was felt the hardest in the peaceful community of Pasadena where deeply-rooted trees were uprooted and flung like toys by the wind across streets, into homes and onto parked cars. Many Southland residents were stunned by the devastation by Mother Nature.

The former owner of the country’s largest asbestos abatement training school was sentenced to prison last month after having fled the United States after her trial in 2008. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton sentenced Albania Deleon to 87 months in prison to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. She was ordered to pay more than $1.2 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and several hundred thousand dollars to AIM Mutual Insurance Company. In 2008 Deleon was convicted of charges including selling training certificates to thousands of illegal aliens who had not taken the mandatory course. She allegedly placed these unqualified people in temporary positions as certified asbestos abatement workers in public buildings. “Today’s sentence marks the final chapter in bringing Albania Deleon to justice,” said EPA’s Cynthia Giles. “Committing environmental crimes to make a profit that put workers and our communities at risk carries serious consequences.”

U.S. contractors performing renovation, restoration or painting services in homes built prior to 1978 are now required to adhere to lead-safe work practice requirements as directed by the U.S. EPA. The new EPA rules remove provisions from previous legislation which permitted owner-occupants to “opt-out” of requiring their contractors to follow lead-safe work practices provided no children under six years of age resided in the home. However, almost a million children have elevated blood lead levels as a result of exposure to lead hazards, which can lead to diminished brain functions, learning disabilities and behavior issues. Consequently, the rules have enacted to protect vulnerable children across the country. And kids are not the only ones at risk. Adults exposed to lead hazards can suffer high blood pressure and headaches, among other ailments. The EPA has now eliminated the opt-out provision because improper renovations in older homes can create lead hazards resulting in the negative health effects mentioned, and many others not. Although the rules may be considered a small step toward rectifying a larger problem, they do help the situation. The EPA’s public awareness campaign currently utilizes print ads, radio spots, print pamphlets and fact sheets to educate consumers and contractors alike. In a continual effort towards safety of our customers and employees, Unique Restoration has been certified by the U.S. EPA as a lead-safe contractor.
